Reseña/Review

Estoy queriendo identificar claramente la voz de Sam (que suena tremendamente familiar para mí, incluso con los coros) antes de comenzar, sin embargo no lo hago. Puede que regrese a esta página a colocar el nombre.

The Ebb And Flow es un proyecto de San Francisco, con un sonido confusamente reciclado y en loop: Aunque es una banda estadounidense, más bien podría sonar a británicos haciendo música americana alternativa (algo así como lo que hace Gomez, con otro sonido, muy propio de The Ebb And Flow)

Comienza con 4 Track Mind – Dusty Crickets, con guitarras saturadas pero melódicas y de repente trompetas, luego moogs y hasta farfisas. Con esto ya el interés es más que mera curiosidad. Todo en un ambiente indie, alt o como quieran llamar, un manejo sino lo-fi, si «sucio» que funciona, espero que me entiendan, con todo y la trompeta. Excelente track. Que finaliza con los 20segundos de Murmur in Fa a manera de epílogo. Lo que es la sección rítmica hace un buen trabajo en este y otros tracks.

Hay un sentido retro y a la vez moderno en casi todos los tracks, una curiosidad musical que recuerda la innovación psicodélica de la región en los 60’s. Un sonido que parecería hacer que las canciones se parezcan, pero -a excepción de Murmur in Fa, cada track tiene y aporta lo suyo.

Escuchen Me and My Twins, quizá más light y más retro, donde arranca la voz de Sam (en el primer track, la vocalización está a cargo Roshy Khesthi, un excelente trabajo). Otro muy bueno y simple track que explota lo que musicalmente se está haciendo detrás con excelentes arreglos, incluyendo los efectos y ruidos que percibes en el fondo. Muy buen trabajo del bajo y la batería. Y la voz…. sigo intentanto y no, no es la de …, y tampoco es Beck, tampoco David Byrne.

Routes Of Roots comienza con un movimiento rápido de bajo y batería que se acompaña de mas sábanas sonoras a cargo de varios instrumentos, incluyendo guitarras (que en unos pocos instantes podría sonar hasta a The Police), melodicas, etc. haciendo de este track casi instumental (otra vez las voces femeninas) un gran aporte al sonido de la banda.

Por favor escuchen la instrumental y casi progresiva Throop con todo: percusiones, la t-r-o-m-p-e-t-a! la sección rítmica. Un excelente track que finalmente me enganchó con la banda para terminar con lo que en mi opinión es el mejor track del disco: Contra Verse un track muy animado, rápido, potente que cambia a lo largo del tiempo, que hasta puede ser comercial pero que sería el que podría manejar el sentido completo de la banda en este EP. El track que quedarás tarareando. De nuevo, la trompeta de Jacobs! incluso si parece desesperada y estridente suena bien. Mención especial al delirante sax de Ralph Carney, qué sonidos puede sacarle a su instrumento!!. Como en todo el disco: bajo y batería en un sorprendente trabajo.

Un buen regalo de inicio de año.

I’m trying to identify Sam’s voice (that sounds too much familiar for me, even when accompanied by the backing vocals) before starting, but I can’t. Maybe I’ll come back to this page to put up the name that is running out of my memory.The Ebb And Flow is a San Francisco based project with a confusingly recursive sound: although is an American band, they sound like a Brit band making American music (something like what Gomez do on their first albums, but with a style of their own).

It starts with «4 Track Mind – Dusty Crickets», with saturated and at the same time melodic guitars, suddenly accompanied by trumpets and moogs. Listening to this is enough to be more interested than curious. Everything within an indie, alt or whatever-you-want-to-call mood somehow «noisy» when not «lo-fi», and these guys make it work, I hope you can understand me.

There’s a retro sense that is also modern in almost all the tracks. A musical curiosity that resembles the psychedelic innovation of the bay area in the 60´s. A blend that could make that all of the tracks sound similar (with the exception of Murmur in Fa), but each one of the tracks adds by itself.

Listen to «Me And My Twins», maybe more «light» and more retro, where Sam’s voice starts to be noticeable (on the first track, Roshy Khesthi is in charge of the vocals). A good and simple track that exploits what’s been done backstage with the arrangements, sound effects and noises heard at the background. Superb job on the bass guitar and drums. … And the voice … I’m still trying….and no, it is not that of… , nor Beck, neither David Byrne’s.

«Routes Of Roots» starts with a fast movement on the rhythm section (bass and drums) that is accompanied by more sonic envelopes made by instruments that includes guitars (at some times sounding like Andy Summers’ Police performance), melodicas, etc. that make this almost instrumental track (with the female voices again) a milestone to the band’s sound.

Pleas, listen to the instrumental and almost progressive «Throop» with all its percussion, the t-r-u-m-p-e-t and rhythm section. An excellent track that finally hooked me with the band which finishes with (IMHO) the best track on the EP: «Contra Verse» a very fast, powered track that have many changes along its time and that could create the complete sense and mood of The Ebb and Flow in this EP. This is the track that you would sing (or hum or think of) for days and days. Again, the almost anxious Jacobs’ trumpet and the delirating and overflown (great!) sax of Ralph Carney made their trademarks on the track (incredible sounds that these guys can rip off from their instruments!). Like in all the EP: the drums and bass making a terrific job.

A great gift for the beginning of the year.
