Reseña/Review

Bendito Internet, curioso MySpace…. por ese medio fuimos contactados por miembros de Godsticks, banda galesa de tres elementos, quienes nos introdujeron a su música (enviada doblemente, tanto por medio electrónico como físicamente), así de fácil, así de simple. No nos cansamos de decir lo afortunados que somos de estar en este programa y haciendo este trabajo solamente por querer mucho a la música.

Pero a lo que nos compete: Godsticksse arma en el 2006 y se nota que los músicos han hecho de todo y aunque tratan de manejarse más en un ámbito progresivo, la sensación final es de un pop rock elaborado con elementos de jazz y progresivo. Dicho de otra forma, las ejecuciones y construcciones tienen mucho de la complejidad del progresivo, pero el mood que generan los lleva al  pop rock: Desde la interesante y rockera Not The Faceaparecen estos elementos de cambios entre lo suave y lo agresivo, aunque Ease The Clownmuestra quizá más que el resto esa mezcla queno es inventada por esta banda (hay algunas otras que han llegado a fórmulas similares) y que puede funcionar quizá más con los que gustan del pop rock: una buena voz, seguro con mucho appeal para las mujeres, una excelente ejecución (la seccion rítmica está de lujo), siendo sin embargo un track de pop rock: la curiosa vocalización inicial mientras piano, bajo y batería entran después de la electrificante guitarra, el track se va «suavizando» a base de coros, mientras atras el ritmo sincopado que toma elementos de jazz ayudados principalmente por el piano, bastante interesante, que te deja una sensación de frescura en algo que -insisto- no es que se haya inventado con Godsticks, peroque probablemente ellos hagan mejor que otros.

Esto puede tener sus consecuencias: es posible que a los proggers más recalcitrantes no les guste, puede considerarse prog light. Por otro lado, algunos amantes del pop, podrían sentir muy complicado lo queoyen. Aquellos que gustan de la música sin problemas de géneros, seguro apreciarán y disfrutarán la propuesta de estos galeses.

Un track que hay que poner sobre el resto por el trabajo de los músicos (casi como si el track hubiese sido más que compuesto, diseñado para mostrar lo que la banda puede hacer) es Puppy Gardener, el track progresivo del EP: el bajo que llega a niveles histéricos mientras la batería realiza un trabajo impecable entre ritmos de todo tipo y un muy buen trabajo de la guitarra picoteando por aquí y por allá, manejando armónicas y toda la cosa mientras al mismo tiempo y a base de capas, genera el «ruido de fondo» para el track. Sin pensarlo, mi track favorito.

Contrastando con el anterior, arranca la guitarra acústica de Venial, un track bastante más suave que el anterior, mucho muy agradable, rítmico, de lo más pop (que no es pop, por supuesto….¡Qué difícil catalogar… y qué bueno que es difícil, si finalmente lo que tenemos entre manos es música, no una etiqueta!) y que quizá sería lo que utilizaría como carta de presentación del grupo en un programa de radio.

Clinicalfinaliza el EP, otro track que se antoja suave, más simple, más acústico, con más espacio para el piano.

Godstickses una banda que deberemos seguir. Creo que a pesar de la tremenda carta de presentación, es prematuro con un EP emitir un juicio acertado: quedaremos en espera (con bastantes ganas) de recibir un album completo y ver hacia dónde se mueve el sonido de este trío que, por lo pronto, deja muchas expectativas con su EP.

Blessed Internet… and that MySpace freaky thing… That’s what members of Godsticks used to contact us. They’re a Welsh trio who introduced us to their music…. so easy and simple… We’ll never end to thank the blessing of working on this radio show and site just for the love of music.

Now, stop the violins and go to business: Godsticks assembles in 2006 and just listening to the first two minutes on Not The Face it’s obvious that these guys have been working on many different music genres. Although they tend to manage more on a progressive (musically speaking) way of doing music, the final sensation you got is that of an elaborate pop rock with elements of jazz and progressive music. In other words: the constructions and performances have a lot of progressive or jazz complexities, but the overall experience is that of pop rock.

Take the interesting and rockish Not The Face, for instance, where you experience sudden changes from soft to aggressive moods. But it’s maybe Ease The Clown the best example of the type of experience and combinations of genres the band delivers in this EP, that I think has more possibilities with rock fans: a good voice (surely a women-magnet), excellent instrumental performances, some rythm changes, ups and ups…. and still it’s pop-rock. Check out the vocalization on the very beginning of the track, while the piano and the rythm section (wow… the rythm section) makes its entrance after an electrifying guitar… the track then softens helped by chorus and in the back, a syncopated rythm taken jazz elements -helped mainly by the piano- leaves a freshness sensation in a fusion that -although not invented by the band (ther are others trying to do the same)- maybe these guys are doing better than others.

This kind of mixing of rythms and genres can have consecuences, though: It´s possible that die-hard progressive fans can think of the experience as light-prog. On the other hand, it could be somehow complex to pop-heads. Definetly, if you like music and are not biased or brain-tied (or spoiled) on the genre-babble-fandom, you surely will appreciate and enjoy the proposal of this three Welsh musicians.

A track that in my humble opinion has to be put above the others thanks to the instrumental performance (it is almost like the track is designed, not composed, to show what the band and each member can do) is Puppy Gardener, the progressive track of the EP: the bass gets hysterical, while the drums performs impeccable among diverse rythms and the guitar does a good job picking here and there, using harmonics while at the same time and using some layers, generate the «background noise» for this cool track. My favourite.

In contrast with that track, an acoustic guitar start in Venial, a more soft track, very, pleasant, rythmic and maybe the more pop oriented track on the EP (of course, it’s not just as simple as to say it’s pop…. How hard to describe! … and how cool that it’s hard… finally what we have between our ears is music, not a label!). Maybe this could be the track that I’d use to introduce the band.

Clinical ends the EP, another «soft» track, simple, acoustic with more space for the piano.

Godsticks is for sure a band to follow. I think that although they deliver a terrific introduction with this EP, is soon to judge with only an EP. I’ll be waiting anxiously to receive or hear a full album (or more songs) and see the direction the band’s sound will take hoping they evolve it. By now, this EP generates great expectations…
