A brief history and origin of our radio show

Talking about our show and its origin, every member of the staff is related to the TI area. We have been cubicle mates, school mates and friends for almost 10 years.

We frequently gathered to review and listen to music, to learn about new releases discovered by other members. Always with the pizza and sodas -yeah, soft drinks… hey! we are nice non-drinking (too much) guys- sharing with the rest our musical discoveries, most listened CD’s and other stuff. One day we said (actually Carlos did) «Why not take this «gathering» to a radio show, c’mon it is such a good experience that the world had to have it!» Then, suddenly we were in front of three microphones. Anyway, we try to make the show as friendly and cozzy as we can… and that’s it.

We decided to take this trip through the music, with the main and solely purpose of having fun. However, from the first show we produced and aired that far January 31st of 2000, we committed not to do what other commercial radio stations and shows do -and we do understand that people working on that kind of shows have to make money, this is the way the world is working these days-. We strongly believe that in terms of music, a radio show like ours have to promote the art and culture in all their forms. It’s sad for us to know that there are few, really, VERY FEW options in Mexico to make what we are intending to do, so we decided that our show would become «the other sound of music»: that kind of music not aired in commercial stations: jazz, blues, metal, ethnic, folk, progressive (a lot of progressive music), and from the mainstream bands, we should play whatever is considered a b-side, not-promoted tracks, alternate versions, etc.

We have learned a lot during this journey… So, Chuy began to take the role of establishing contacts: we discovered a wonderful world within the independent music movement of many types, and as you will notice in the Reviews area, there are tons of music and we are specializing and promoting with all our guts the independent music, while at the same time we review the good old mainstream bands. Meanwhile, Charly made a good job on the technical side: we were the first show on the station to shoutcast on the internet, we also were the first show in making a deal with one of the most important portals in Spanish Language retransmitting the show (we decided to put this deal in standby after 8 months because of legal issues with the radio station: a college one), and making eufOnia the first 2-hour show in our station (Frecuencia Tec). Charly also makes the research for every show. Finally, I dedicated to build a wepbage, that could be a source of information about the shows, and then, when we looked at the potential of this medium, we are using it to promote -among other things- independent music, new material and news about our music world.

We hope you can visit every single corner in this site: we apologize for those incomplete areas, we are making an effort to make this site a good experience for you and an alternate experience besides the radio show.

Breve historia y orígenes del programa de radio

Como se darán cuenta, todos de alguna forma u otra estamos relacionados con el área de Sistemas, hemos sido compañeros en la Universidad o en el trabajo.

Cada cierto tiempo nos juntábamos a revisar música, a aprender de lo que había nuevo o había sido descubierto, con la sempiterna pizza y refrescos -sí, refrescos, también somos gente sana- compartiendo cada quién la música que le gustaba o había descubierto. Un buen día dijimos que porqué no llevábamos esa agradable experiencia a los demás y de repente estábamos ya frente a unos micrófonos platicando… suave…

Decidimos emprender este viaje por la música, con el propósito primordial de divertirnos, sin embargo, desde el primer programa de radio que produjimos el 31 de Enero del 2000 nos prometimos que no haríamos lo que el resto de la radio comercial – aunque entendemos que tiene que vivir de algo, creemos que también, en cuanto a música, debe promover el arte y la cultura en TODAS sus expresiones. Nos es triste saber que son pocas, REALMENTE POCAS, las opciones que existen en México y decidimos que nuestro programa sería «el otro sonido de la música» entendiéndolo como aquello que no se programa comercialmente en la radio: jazz, blues, metal, étnico, folk, progresivo (mucho progresivo) y del mainstream, lo que no se escuchara como b-sides, los tracks NO promovidos, versiones alternas, etc.

Hemos aprendido mucho, como en todos los viajes… Así, Chuy comenzó a tomar la labor de establecer contactos: descubrimos un maravilloso mundo en la música independiente de varios tipos y como notarán en el área de reseñas, hay muchísima música y nos estamos especializando y proponiendo promover mucho la música independiente, sin dejar de revisar lo que sucede en el mainstream o con las bandas ya establecidas -y buenas- en el mundo comercial (… y el no tan comercial). De igual forma, Charly hizo mucha labor en la parte técnica: fuimos promotores y pioneros en la estación en el uso de Shoutcast, así como fuimos los primeros en establecer un trato con uno de los portales más importantes de América Latina para la transmisión y retransmisión del programa (actualmente la promoción está en standby mientras se arreglan cuestiones legales con la estación de radio), nos convirtió en el primer programa de dos horas en la estación y además es quien investiga lo que requerimos para los programas. Finalmente, yo me dediqué a generar una página que en un principio fuese informativa sobre nuestros programas, sin embargo, vemos el potencial que tiene como medio para la promoción -entre otras cosas- de la música independiente, de nuevo material y de noticias del fabuloso mundo de la música.
