Reseña/Review

Un fuerte, fuerte competidor al disco del año Fritz Doddy, sin todo el hype mediatico, entrega una obra maestra de pop sinfónico electrónico y acústico.

The Feeling Of Far es un disco manejado como disco conceptual, prácticamente sin cortes entre tracks, aunque lo puedes escuchar track por track, Doddy recomienda que lo escuches de principio a fin. Coincido (y curiosamente acabo de indicarlo en el review de Drop The Fear).

Cynical Eye muestra de lo que se trata el disco. A resaltar sus coros, los «arreglos sinfónicos» mezclados con sonidos sintéticos, que le dan otro volumen, otro nivel a todo el disco, en este caso, con todo lo que oyes hecho por el mismo Doddy. Diciéndonos algo así como «Vamos a comenzar, empiezo yo, pero falta lo mejor». Para que te des una idea: mandolinas, guitarras, melodicas, mellotrones y sintetizadores. Incluso con las interrupciones fabricadas al final.

AmyEveliano, con la voz de Susan McKeown, al igual que todos los demás es un track inspirado, en este caso, llevándote un poco a la nostalgia, pop cocinado con los mejores ingredientes: guitarras, arreglos de cuerda, cellos, utensilios de cocina (sí), cítaras eléctricas, minimoogs, bouzoukis, bajo de seis cuerdas, un mellotron, piano de juguete, etc. Impresionante… de veras, piensas: ¿De dónde sacó este track y el anterior sin quedarse seco?…. y falta… A resaltar los coros a partir del minuto 4. ¡Grandioso!

Con el motif de Cynical Eye, Doddy hace la transición hacia The Feeling Of Far que da nombre al disco: Coros de voces agudas hechas por Doddy y Valerie Wilson en lo que llama «coros de ardillas» que al entrar las mandolinas, parecen salidos de un viaje por lejanas islas en el Pacífico. Entrando Susan McKeown con un canto gaélico que contrasta con lo que escuchas de fondo… ¡De manera extraordinaria! otra oda al pop, con mellotrones, kalimbas, flautas dulces y strumsticks!. ¡Sublime! (si sigues leyendo y no has ido a hacerte de este disco, estás a tiempo… corre)

Sigue It´s Only A Dream con Doddy otra vez en control de todo: bajo, guitarra acústica, mellotron, guitarra VG-8, e-bow, slide guitar y sintetizador. Un track a la Polyphonic Spree con un solo hombre… casi Gospel, pero más Pop que otra cosa. Un despertador antiguo da pie a las voces infantiles, angelicales de Adrienne Doddy (hija de Fritz) que no te preparan para el duo trompeta-trombón que acompaña a All The Beat (a cargo de Kadlek y Johnson), con bongós, mandolinas, guitarras de 6 y 12 cuerdas, slide guitars entre otros, además de los gritos de Mr. Doddy Sr. (¡despierta!) y ladridos… y la música sigue surgiendo no sé de donde, con una sensibilidad y un cariño impresionantes.

Los niños vuelven a endulzar el sonido en In The Tree con Doddy tocando todo menos el violín (fabuloso al final del primer movimiento, a cargo de Sandra Park) y la batería (que Daj Amal hace sonar perfecta y simple), creciendo y creciendo hasta que «audiblemente» cae la lluvia terminando lo que sería el primer movimiento… siguiendo el «I Wish I didn´t wish» que acaba con sampleos de sus hijos enmedio de la lluvia… dando pie a la simpática Over You si quieres la menos atractiva del disco, que sin embargo, ya quisieran muchos haber compuesto y que da una continuidad y cambio de mood al disco en forma inteligente… Pop de nuestros padres, nostalgia, violines, clarinetes y flautas.

Los violines continúan en God Is Hiding un track corto que sirve casi como puente para volver a tener el motif de Cynical Eye que nos lleve a Nothing But Laughter que con tablas le da un aire oriental a esta sección de la obra que es donde -en mi opinión- se da el mensaje: un himno con coros de niños en donde a pesar de los pesares, podemos encontrar alegría… Otro hit y la creatividad no ha acabado. Es impresionante lo que hace este hombre con su música y los músicos que le acompañan.

Un rimbombante comienzo con arreglos de cuerdas, coros en chino, arreglos de cuerdas (violines, violas y cellos), flautas trasversas y dulces, guitarras, bajos, cavaquinho, sintetizadores, melotrones, ehru que le dan un toque oriental impresionante a una canción dulcísima (aquí las voces llegan a recordar los mejores momentos de Jon Anderson) con que cerrar el disco, otro himno que sale de la cabeza de este impresionante músico, mezclado con el motif de Cynical Eye, quizá viendo las cosas con un ojo cínico… y qué bien resulta.

Agregen dos tracks editados para radio (me quedo con los originales y con el resto del disco, difícilmente podré escuchar un sólo track sin pensar que me falta algo antes o después…)

Un disco con el que la música te da motivos de estar alegre por vivir, incluso cuando los mensajes son para que pienses y profundices, como dice Doddy «¿Qué diablos hay de malo en ser normal?. Hay risas en lo más profundo de mi cabeza. Hoy no me siento desesperanzado«.

A strong, strong competitor to become our album of the year.

Fritz Doddy, without all the media hype, brings a masterpiece of symphonic, electronic and acoustic pop.

The Feeling Of Far is something near a concept album. Almost without blanks between tracks. And although you can hear it track by track, Doddy recommends to listen to it from beginning to end uninterrupted. I agree (curiously, I have make the same recommendation with the Drop Of Fear debut album).

Cynical Eye somehow shows what the album is all about, musically speaking. I want to highlight the choruses and symphonic arrangements mixed with synthetic sounds that deepen the whole CD and send it to a superior level. In this track Doddy makes everything, telling us something like «OK, we’re just introducing the music, let me start, but you must stay, better things are coming». Just for you to have an idea of what I’m talking about: this guy uses mandolins, guitars, melodicas, mellotrons and other synths. And this includes the on purpose interruptions at the end of the track.

Amyeveliano, with the voice of Susan McKeown, as in other tracks, is and inspired piece of music. This time it takes you to nostalgic places, a gourmet-like-cooked pop using the best ingredients: guitars, strings arrangements, minimoogs, bouzoukis, 6-string bass, mellotron, toy piano, etc. Impressing… really. You think: Who is this guy? Where does he get this and the last track? … and he’s not finished yet. The highlight: the choruses starting on the 4th minute. Great!

Using the Cynical Eye motif, Doddy makes a transition to The Feeling Of Far: High note choruses made by Doddy and Valerie Wilson that he calls chipmunk chorus. When the mandolin sounds you feel like in a trip on some Pacific Islands. Then, again, the voice of k with a gaelic chant that contrast a lot with what you’re hearing at the background… in extraordinary ways! Another pop ode, full of mellotrons, kalimbas, recorders and strumsticks! Sublime! (if you’re still reading and haven’t run to get this CD, you’re still on time… run! This review will still be here when you return!)

Next, you’ll hear It’s Only A Dream with Doddy again in control of everything: bass, acoustic guitar, mellotron, a VG-8 guitar, e-bow, slide guitar and synths. A track a la Polyphonic Spree with just one man… almost Gospel, but more a pop song than anything else. An old wake up clock sound introduce the childish voices, angelical voices of Adrienne (Fritz daughter) . Your mood at this time doesn’t allow you to be prepared to the trombone and trumpet (Kadlek & Johnson) used in All The Beat, with bongoes, mandolins, 6 and 12 string guitars, slide guitars that emerge from papa Doddy shouting Wake Up! and some barking at the background… and the music continues to flow from I don’t know where, with an impressive sensibility and caring.

The children sweetens the sound again in In The Tree with Doddy playing everything but the violin (awesome at the end of the first movement, thanks to Sandra Park) and drums (that Daj Amal makes sound perfect and simple), growing and growing until you can hear the rain ending the firs movement and continuing with «I whish I didn’t wish» that ends with the children under the rain sampled. Then it comes the funny Over You, maybe the least attractive song of the album… Many artists would kill to have composed this track, though. This track also contributes to a «disrupted» and intelligent flow of the album… sounding like our parent’s pop, nostalgia, violins, clarinets and flutes.

The violins persist on God Is Hiding a short track that serves like a bridge to return to the Cynical Eye motif that takes us to Nothing But Laughter using tabla which gives an oriental taste to this section of the album that in my case gives the message of the album: a hymn with childish choruses stating that although all the negative surroundings that we have each day, we can find happiness. Another hit… and creativity doesn’t stop. It’s amazing what this guy does helped by the rest of the musicians.

A bombastic start with string arrangements (violin, viola, cello), chinese choruses, flutes, recorders, guitars, bass, cavaquinho, synths, mellotron, ehru which gives an amazing oriental touch to this sweet song (here and in some other cases, the voices resemble the best moments of Jon Anderson) that closes the album. Another anthem emerged from the privileged senses of this musician, blended with the Cynical Eye motif… maybe seeing everythin with a cynical eye… that succed and I applause!

The CD includes two tracks edited for radio (I prefer the originals and the rest of the album. Frankly, I doubt I could hear just one track without thinking I’m missing something before or after…)

An album where music gives you good reasons to be happy and content and grateful to be alive, including the moments where the lyrics make you deeply think… Like Doddy says: «So what the hell is wrong with being normal? There’s nothing but laughter deep inside my head … I’m not feeling hopeless today»
